Prior to the opening of the first bridge across the North Saskatchewan on June 7, 1950 (bottom right), an event celebrated by close to 12,000 people, people and their conveyances crossed by ferry (right), as this 1917 photo shows, while cattle being trailed to pasture had to swim for it, as Court Smith's herd did in 1918 (bottom ).
