In 2012 two waterlines were under construction along the Iron Horse Trail and it required careful attention to how contractors were dealing with trail users. One line went from the St Paul treatment plant to Elk Point using some roads and using the Iron Horse Trail. In Smoky Lake County the waterline was extended from Smoky Lake to Vilna.
