ELK POINT â 'Cinderella' was presented by the Eik Point Figure Skating Club Friday, February 22nd. in their second annual Carnival to draw the largest crowd yet assembled in the Agricultural Society arena.
In his welcoming remarks. Agricultural Society President Blaine Easthope announced that the gross proceeds of the carnival, through gate receipts, raffles, and the Lions Club Queen Contest were over $3100 and all proceeds go to the arena fund.
In a prelude to the Elk Point Club's presentation, two lovely young ladies from the Royal Glenora Club. Edmonton, Joanne McLeod and Robyn Le Riche performed dazzling solos of intricate routines.
The whole effort attested to the dedication of Elk Point's young figure skaters and the tireless efforts of the executive of the club. Costumes and props were beautiful and imaginative, and their equal would be difficult to find. Several young skaters after only two years of training displayed creditable skill in solos.
Some of the group numbers were delightful, particularly the Ball Dancers. the Guards, and the Horses and Footmen in the carriage scene.
Club pro, Mrs. Debbie Mallett from Lloydminster, authenticated her expertise as an instructor in performing a fine solo after the intermission. Two Lions Club clowns were most entertaining, and kept the action going when set changes were necessary. The Lions Club presented their Queen candidates in their usual colorful fashion by bringing them to centre ice in a brilliant yellow Terra Cat.
Runners-up Susan Bartholomew, Eliza Fryingpan, Linda Swedgan, and Ehtire Nelson were presented, and then a happy Miss Ester Buksa was crowned Queen. Although all went home enriched by having enjoyed a fine performance. a few lucky people were more tangibly rewarded. .
Steve and Walter Ference won the beef raffle by the Agricultural Society. Winners of the Lions Club draw from queen candidate tickets were Glen Cinnamon. $100; Wm. Ewaskiw (Derwent) $50; and Ludwig Vogel $25. Gordon Kozicki won the quilt raffle by the Figure Skating Club (donated by Mrs. Nellie Gozjolko) and Chrystal Jacobson the stuffed frog (donated by Jeanne May).
To the mistresses of ceremony, Roberta Holliday and Angela Muff, and the executive of the Elk Point Figure Skating Club congratulations are due for a job well done.
