Year in Review from Elk Point Review

This new section has the Year in Review for Elk Point Review, a January feature of the Elk Point Review from 1980 to today written and edited by Vick Brooker, longtime editor of the paper and also President of the Elk Point Historical Society.

Background to Elk Point Newspapers

Early Elk Point Papers

Summarized from Steve Andrishak

The Elk Point Hunter was the first Elk Point Paper (about 1962.) This weekly was published by Sun Publishing in Edmonton, Alberta by T. W. Pue - the local editor was Mrs. Niki Riemer.

The Elk Point Star made its debut in the early 1970s. It, too, was published by T. W. Pue and printed in Edmonton. The local reporter was Marlene Nettleton. The Elk Point Star was followed by the Elk Point Reflections, which began operating in 1979. Its publishers were Heather Calder and Ethel Schreyer of Mannville, Alberta. This weekly operated only a short while.

The Elk Point Sentinel started up in 1980. It was published every Wednesday by Erik Nielsen in the back part of the old Coop building across from the Post Office.

Ten years ago, in September, 1983, the Elk Point Lake-land Review started up in those same premises. It was published by Kathy Howard, who also published Mannville Reflections at that time, and the editor was Fija Schwab. John McGregor sold advertising and Donna Boothman was also on staff. In March 1984, the Review was bought out by the St. Paul Journal, and published by Darrell and L. H. Droum of St. Paul. Vicki Brooker became managing editor in September of that year. Today, this weekly publication is known as the Elk Point Review and is still edited by Mrs. Brooker.

Later Elk Point Papers

Mannville Reflections carried Elk Point news in February 1980, and Vicki’s oldest daughter Margie Brooker was a student reporter who sent them Elk Point news. That's how Vicki Brooker got her new job, copying her notes and submitting them to the St Paul Journal.  At that time, the Manville Reflections were still in Mannville, but later they got an office in Elk Point and started an offshoot paper called Elk Point Reflections.

After the Elk Point Sentinel shut down, maybe in 1982, the Elk Point Reflections moved into the office across from what was then the post office, and had Fija Schwab as editor, Donna Boothman as receptionist and John McGregor as ad salesman.

LH Drouin bought the Manville Reflections out in April 1984 and changed the name to Elk Point Lakeland Review, it came with the staff and Vicki was added on. Vicki Brooker had been the Elk Point reporter for the St. Paul Journal from February 1980 until LH bought the Lakeland Review. Vicki Brooker became the editor that September when Fija left and remained in that position until we became part of Lakeland This Week.
