Elk Point Town Council has been advised that Elk Point selected for further evaluation as a potential site for the Northern Lights Library System’s new headquarters. The letter, read at Council’s regular meeting on October 12, advised the Town that while the other three towns on the short list, St. Paul, Vermilion and Vegreville, have more of the attributes NLLS is seeking in a headquarters site, Elk Point has an appropriate building available which makes the town worthy of consideration.

The Former Pan Canadian building has 32 offices, plus board rooms, adequate parking, a very efficient heating and cooling system and a large warehouse space.

Council is currently working on information packages and a presentation to be made by Mayor Ed Buck to the Northern Lights Board on October 23 in Spruce Grove. Buck feels “we have a lot going for us” in being considered for the headquarters site. “We're just going to do our best.” Deputy Mayor Bill Schuhmacher, who is the Town’s representative to NLLS, said the Town “will present the facts. That’s all we can do.” Because of their concentration on efforts to be named the site of the new Northern Lights headquarters, earlier plans to attend the Rural Physician Recruitment Fair were set aside for this year. Rumors that Elk Point could have a new post office were discussed by Council. Town manager Myron Goyan says Canada Post is not looking for proposals for a new site, but that proposals are coming in nonetheless. Council agreed that a “nice looking post office” would be an asset to the town, and agreed to contact Canada Post for details on the status of any changes which are in the works.
