Elk Point Chamber of Commerce has named E-Can Oilfield Services as their 1997 Business of the Year. E-Can was chosen by secret ballot from three nominees presented at the Chamber’s November 19 meeting.
E-Can is one of Elk Point’s major success stories. Starting as a very small operation in the early 1980s, it has grown to a major employer with well over 100 trucks serving the oilfield here and in other areas of the province. The nomination also recognized E-Can’s safety program, their dedication to the Oil Patch Crime Watch, their enormous commitment to the community by development of industrial and residential properties and their support of many non-profit organizations in the community. E-Can “has been the leader in putting Elk Point on the oilfield services map by setting the highest standards in equipment and manpower,” according to the nomination.
Also nominated for the honor were ist Class Office Services and Ultimate Auto Glass and Upholstery. Ist Class is also highly involved in the oil industry, and is another success story of a business which started as a one person operation and has grown substantially over the past few years, now offering a full line of office supplies in additon to its bookkeeping and office services. Ultimate Auto Glass and Upholstery was applauded for its exceptional customer service.
The Business of the Year award is slated to be presented at the Chamber’s December 3 meeting.

Business of the Year award presented

Andrew Boddy, who has seen his oilfield business grow from two trucks and four employees in October 1984 to, at last count, 108 Western Stars and a huge roster of workers, proudly accepted Elk Point's 1997 Business of the Year award from the Elk Point Chamber of Commerce last Wednesday.
The handsome etched glass trophy created by Edmonton’s Rick Garinger was sponsored by the Canadian Wheat Board.
Boddy says the business he opened in Elk Point just over 13 years ago “has come a long way. We are very proud of our roots, and we feel that our location in Elk Point has given us a good advantage over companies that have their headquarters elsewhere.” E-Can_ recently opened a roomy new office building adjacent to their shop, and Boddy says they plan to “make Elk Point our home” far into the future. He was “very appreciative of the award” which salutes a business which has thrived here in Elk Point.
Certificates of appreciation will go to two other worthy nominees, Ist Class Office Services and Ultimate Auto Glass and Upholstery.
