Elk Point Golf and Country Club has received a $50,000 grant under the Community Facility Enhancement Program to help finance the installation of grass greens and an irrigation system at the Elk Point Golf Course. MLA John Drobot, who made the presentation to Golf Club President Bill Jennissen, and the Honorable Ken Kowalski, Minister responsible for Lotteries and Gaming; made the announcement regarding the grant.
The grant is part of a recently concluded three-year program which provided lottery funds for the repair, renovation, upgrading or expansion of a wide variety of community facilities. A total of $100 million from Alberta’s Lottery Fund was allocated to the program at its introduction in 1988, with sport, cultural, recreational and other family and community - use facilities as the funding beneficiaries. Applications to the program - were accepted up to September 1, 1991, with applicants matching a minimum of 50 percent of facility enhancement project ig and 25 percent of a community facility assessment study. Mr. Kowalski stated that “together with their families, Albertans are able to enjoy the many benefits to community life that have been made available by the Community Facility Enhancement Program.”
Mr. Drobot added, “that facilities like these play an important role in enriching local recreational activities and I am pleased this worthy project has received lottery funding through the Community Facility Enhancement Program.”
Jennissen says the huge project is “on its way” with a dugout to hold irrigation water completed and some of the fairways redone. Material for tee boxes and other construction is on hand and will be put to use shortly, and a wet well and water line from the Town raw water reservoir will also be installed soon.
In addition to the CFEP grant, the Golf and Country Club is getting donations from local service clubs and corporate donors toward the project, which will give Elk Point a much upgraded facility for the enjoyment of local golf enthusiasts and tourists alike.
