July
On July 31RRTS attended an opening of a pedestrian bridge which is underslung the new bridge across the North Saskatchewan River at Fort Saskatchewan. The local municipalities combined with other funders to build this $5 million project. It should now be possible when a trail is finished from Edmonton to Devon for hikers and bikers to travel from Devon to Cold Lake or the Saskatchewan border at Onion Lake. The route would be from Devon to Edmonton through the River Valley Authority trails to Fort Saskatchewan. From there trail users can use the Lamoureux trail, a part of the Athabasca Trail and use a back road connection to Waskatneau. From there they would be on the Iron Horse Trail to either Cold Lake or Heinsburg. From Heinsburg there is an TCT on-road connection to the Saskatchewan Border at Onion Lake. This bridge completed our RRTS 1999 goal of building a trail from Fort Saskatchewan to the Saskatchewan Border north of the North Saskatchewan River.
We helped the Elk Point Chamber of Commerce give information to Communities in Bloom evaluators on August 2.
