Arrivals during the War and after - 1940s

by Marvin Bjornstad

This group of new arrivals came from a few different sources. Some families were fleeing the Wars in Europe and around the globe. Some families were moving closer together after a death in the war. The society of Canada changed during the war with increasing industrialization and manufacturing; many women now worked. As the war ended the returning soldiers came back more experienced and more skilled and ready for a new world. The resulting boom changed life across the country and Elk Point was part of the change. Family life changed and was much more mobile. Entertainment with movies, radio, and sports became much more important. The car had more of an impact and schools became more important. Farming changed. Not all families changed at the same rate but change was there.
