Elk Point's earliest industry was of course the Fur Trade in the 1790s. The Hudson Bay Company, the North West Company and Alexander Mackenzie's ABC Company were in the area. Around 1900 with the beginning of settlement industies to service the agricultural industry predominated. With the coming of the railway in 1927 other main industries mainly utilities came to town. In the late 1940s the Alberta Salt Company set up shop in Lindbergh and Elk Point benifited. In the late 1970s a focus began on oil and gas.
