The Town of Elk Point has made a decision to join with the Town and County of St. Paul and the Town and County of Smoky Lake to form a regional landfill authority. Mayor Ed Buck told Council last week that the authority has set up a 15 member board to get the preliminary work underway. Elk Point, the Town and County of Smoky Lake each have two members on the board while the Town and County of St. Paul each have three. Mayor Buck and councillor Bill Schuhmacher will represent Elk Point on the board with the other members of Elk Point’s Public Works committee as alternates.
Council reviewed at length the sale of Elk Point Gas Lid. to Centra Gas, and moved to sign a memorandum of understanding with them agreeing with the sale, provided the Town can negotiate a franchise agreement with Centra Gas on satisfactory terms. First reading was given to a bylaw allowing the mayor and town manager to sign a ten year franchise agreement with Centra to supply gas to Elk Point. Mayor Buck indicated that Elk Point Gas Ltd. customers will receive a rebate from the proceeds of the sale, and that gas prices will drop when Centra takes over.
The Town has received approval for their long awaited Street Improvement Grant, for projects in the next two years. The project will include paving of 49th Avenue and Main Street.
Also in the planning stages for next year is the con struction of soccer fields at the Recreation Park. Mayor Buck turned the matter over to Public Works to meet with the Soccer Club and then to come up with costs for leveling and developing the area. He suggested that lottery funding might be available to the club for part of the project.
Concerns with street lighting in the Fort George Manor area will be looked into, although it was noted that there is a light on each corner, plus lights on the front of the curling rink.
Mayor Buck declared November 27 to December 6 as White Ribbon Week in support of that program against spousal abuse, and also declared December 1 as World AIDS Day in Elk Point.
