Early Elk Point Fire Department

This preliminary information was gathered in the 1960s from Elk Point Town Council minutes by Velma Andrishak. 

Date Fire Protection
Feb 21 1949 Meeting called to form a Fire Brigade. 37 men signed up. L Sumpton electes as Fire Chief and was to choose his deputies. Fire hall was adjacent to town Hall.
1950 CNR gave permission to Village to use their well for water for the fire trucks
April 12 1954 Fire alarm to be installed at the hospital connected with the fire hall
Nov 19 1954 decided that the church bell be run for curfew until a siren obtained
   
Feb 11 1957 At AGM P Yewchin, Fire Chief, reported the fire truck was alost on its last draw. It was felt that the purchase of a new one was advisable and the expense would be offset by lower fire insurance rates
June 1 1957 $15000 to be borrowed for fire truck and equipment
Feb 8 1960 P Yewchin wished to resign as fire chief but was urged to stay on. 
Nov 29 1965 P Yewchin resigned as Fire Chief. It was decided to present him with a plaque in aprreciation of his services
Jan 31 1966 Steve Andrishak appointed Fire Chief. During this period $500 was given each yea to the firemen for expenses etc.
